Origin of my translation device

I graduated from the Los Angeles Trade Technical College Registered Nurse Program and am from the class of 1992-1993. During my first year as a new nurse, my main challenge was that I had many monolingual patients that i needed to communicate with. I’m able to communicate with Spanish speaking patients without any problems. But I had patients who only spoke Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Farsi, Korean, a few African dialects and several other languages. At that time there were no descent translation systems worth investing in. So I had designed several “language translation boards” which included the most commonly used words, phrases, sentences, and characters. They became useful noted by the fact that several of my co-workers were asking me to lend the boards to them so that they can talk to their monolingual patients. There were a few staff members from other departments who spoke the languages that I needed translation assist with. But they were not always able to leave their posts/assignments for fear of falling behind in their work or not being able to respond to problems or urgencies of their assigned patients. Therefore, I created my special tools. The boards involved many hours of research and organization. Now, thanks to much improvement in modern technology, EKKO has shown to be a great concept and will connect people worldwide by removing the language barrier
